Everyone wants to lower their capital expenditures and increase operational efficiency - it’s a sign of the times. The economy of the past 12 - 18 months has forced all organizations to do more with less and become more efficient. While everyone can identify with the request to do more with less, they can also identify with the overwhelming need to deliver quality. Telepresence centers feature high-definition visual communications tools that range from personal units to life-size screens that sprawl the length of the room, with duplex and directional sound. The technology allows clients to hold virtual meetings with multiple locations at one time and provide them with both the security and freedom to organize meetings with external parties outside of the corporate firewall. IBM will provide telecommunications for this service by leveraging its partnerships with telecommunications providers worldwide, and technology for this service using Cisco’s TelePresence technology.

I’m proud to announce that representatives from Lockheed Martin, SAIC, and Unisys will join me in a “Tactical Cloud Computing” Panel at SYS-CON’s 1st Annual Government IT Conference & Expo in Washington DC on October 6, 2009.
As Technical Chair of this conference, my goal has been to provide useful and actionable information to the conference attendees. While the industry has engaged in a rigorous discussion around “enterprise” cloud computing, information on tactical or deployable cloud computing possibilities has been scarce. To address this, I’ve asked Dataline partners to join me and share their views on this issue.
Tactical Cloud Computing refers to the use of cloud computing technology and techniques for the support of localized and short-lived information access and processing requirements. Use cases could include:
- “Cloudbursting” to support cyclic data processing requirements
- Establishing a cloud-based collaboration environment in order to coordinate firefighting resources during a wildfire
- Virtually binding shipboard IT infrastructures in order to create a battlegroup infrastructure-as-a-service platform

Dan Jones writes “It has been estimated that Amazon Web Services is provisioning some 50,000 EC2 server instances per day, or more than 18 million per year. But that may not be entirely accurate. A single Amazon Machine Image (the virtual machine) may be launched multiple times as an EC2 instance, thereby indicating that the true number of individual Amazon servers may be lower, perhaps much lower, than 50,000 per day. So, even if it’s out by a factor of 10 that’s still 1.8 million VMs per year. Is that sustainable? By way of comparison, In February of this year, Amazon announced S3 contained 40 billion objects. By August, the number was 64 billion objects. This indicates a growth of 4 billion S3 objects per month, giving a daily growth total of about 133 million new S3 objects per day. How big can the cloud get before it starts to rain?”
