Atlantis Computing, the leader in Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) storage and performance optimization solutions, today announced the expanded support for Citrix technologies including the ability for Atlantis ILIO to run as a virtual appliance natively on the Citrix XenServer hypervisor. Atlantis ILIO is the first storage optimization solution to deliver up to 90 percent storage reduction and better than PC performance for Citrix XenDesktop on XenServer.
The Atlantis ILIO software virtual appliance allows customers to reduce the cost of their Citrix implementations by cutting the amount of storage normally required and enabling the use of lower cost storage options as part of any desktop virtualization project. In addition, Atlantis ILIO makes virtual desktops run faster than PCs to ensure user acceptance and enables security measures to be deployed without impacting the number of users per server.

Nexenta, the OpenStorage shop, didn’t set out to get into the VDI business. It happened when it kept hearing the same complaints in engagements with VMware.
That led to the new NexentaVDI provisioning and rapid deployment solution, which is supposed to make the world a happier place by getting rid of the nasty storage and systems management complexities in virtual desktop infrastructures with end-to-end automation.
And it’s all done with a little plug-in for VMware View 5 that talks to a dashboard with real-time analytics and masters View’s tiered storage.
Frankly it sounds uncommonly simple.

Facebook Thursday set up a non-profit foundation to run its six-month-old Open Compute Project (OCP) aimed at defining the cheapest and most efficient massively web-scale infrastructure possible using the open source model.
Its first OCP data center in Prineville, Oregon, managed a 38% increase in energy efficiency for 24% less than other Facebook facilities cost. The idea is to push the envelope.
The Open Compute Foundation (OCF) is reportedly well enough funded to start. There is a board of directors. Hardware designs and source files will be published, IP contributed and many eyes will look for ways to improve the standard à la Linux. The idea is to speed innovation by commoditizing the baser elements.
