It may be two years late, but Intels “Tukwila” Itanium processor offers twice the number of cores as the current “Montecito” version, significant upgrades in memory and network bandwidth, features it shares with Intels high-end Xeon server chip and greater virtualization capabilities. The Itanium 9300 series comes the same day that IBM is rolling out four new Power7-based servers and Oracle is integrating Sun into its business.
- It took a little longer than expected, but Intel officials have finally released the long-awaited “Tukwila,” the next-generation Itanium processor that offers significant advances in performance and scalability and a host of features that improve everything from virtualization capabilities to reliab…

Back in 2005 we all knew that Fibre Channel and Ethernet would eventually support transmission rates of 10 Gbit/s and above and now in 2010 that day has pretty much dawned on us. In the excitement of those days what was always a concern was that the host’s I/O bus would need to transmit data at the same rate. But with all the advancements of PCI-E, the nature of all parallel buses is that their transmission rate can only be increased to a limited degree so how was this potential barrier ever going to be solved? The solution being penned around at the time was InfiniBand. Not only did it carry a name that seemed straight out of a Star-Trek episode but it also promised a ‘futuristic’ I/O technology which replaced the PCI bus with a serial network. That was five years ago and bar a few financial services companies that run trading systems I hadn’t really seen any significant implementations or developments of the technology that was marketed with the phrase ‘to Infiniband and beyond’. But two weeks ago that suddenly changed.

Looking ahead, I believe 2010 will be an inflection point for Voltaire and our markets. The principles used in high performance computing of scale-out, low latency and application acceleration is becoming the foundation for next generation, virtualized data centers and the rapidly expanding cloud computing opportunity. We believe that we are well-positioned at the forefront of a coming widespread infrastructure refresh in the data center. We aim to capitalize on this potential and I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for Voltaire in the coming months and years.

Thanks to @jadkins for the colorful ending to that cliched saying, which really got me thinking. Sometimes we just make certain aspects of architecture too difficult for no reason. Good design is important and can have significant financial impact if done incorrectly, but chances are the negative impact comes into play during the engineering effort, not during the architecture. To clarify my point, one must first understand what architecture is really focused on and how that differentiates from engineering.
